N. E. Downing (Blackheath) Ltd. is a family run Funeral Directors based in Brierley Hill in the West Midlands. For four generations we have been privileged to serve many families within the surrounding areas during their time of crisis and loss.
The company originated from Vicarage Road in Blackheath and has now grown to encompass the whole of the Black Country area. As one of the West Midlands longest established independent family Funeral Directors, incorporating:

We are committed to providing the highest service to each family we serve and from the moment you get in touch we pride ourselves on personal attention to every detail. Today the business is overseen by brother and sister William and Lucy and they are supported by a loyal and dedicated team.
Traditional Funerals
No two funerals are the same and nor should they be. Every funeral we arrange is tailored to the needs and desires of each individual family.The first decision to make is if it will be a cremation or a burial service. Will the service take place in a church or at the crematorium chapel?
Many parts of the funeral service can be bespoke to the individual. This can be reflected in the flowers that are chosen, the pictures and design of the order of service produced for the service to the coffin its self. Many options are available from:
• Traditional oak
• Oak veneered coffin
• American style casket
• Willow coffin
• Brightly decorated coffin
Different methods of transport are also possible from our modern grey Mercedes Benz fleet to a motorbike hearse or a horse drawn hearse
Alternative Funerals
To some a traditional funeral will not be what they want for their own funeral or the funeral they are arranging. There are two alternatives that we offer.
The first is a ‘Simple Funeral’. Here we will arrange for a funeral to take place on a day and time to suit the family. We will meet them at the crematorium on the day of the funeral and everything is kept very simple. An officiant will lead the service and the cremated remains will be returned to the family to do as they wish with.
The other option is commonly known as a ‘Direct Funeral’. Here we provide a cremation service but this is done with nobody present and at a day and time to suit us, the funeral director. We will return the cremated remains to the family or they can scattered in the garden of remembrance of the crematorium.
Pre-paid Funerals
We offer a possibility to pre purchase your funeral plan through our association with Golden Charter. Like every funeral we conduct, every funeral plan is different. Therefore every funeral plan is tailored to reflect the desires of the individual.
The main advantages of this are you are only paying for what you want to take place and not buying a generic plan to cover many eventualities. The other advantage is that it spares loved ones the stress of having to make the funeral arrangements. With our help you can plan in advance so everything is taken care of and your wishes are followed.
Funeral Plans are individually priced and a number of payment options are available. The payment can also be spread monthly over several years. Once the plan is fully paid the family or estate will not be charged a penny more for our funeral director services. There are some third party costs known as disbursements that are outside our control (such as crematorium charges, doctors’ fees or cemetery costs). Only if these costs increase faster than the growth in the value of the plan might there be a balance to pay.
